The Fluid Coupling has less power loss and a firmer shift sequence- a Torque Converter has more 'give' and a higher Stall Speed resulting in a softer power delivery. W113 Mercedes-Benz cars have a legendary status: in our opinion a 230SL has a bit more 'snap + crackle' for a several very good reasons: it is the only engine in the series with a 'tuned header' as well as a hotter cam- the later cars were softened up with cast iron manifolds and milder cams. Or maybe itвЂ™s the considerable bumpers that caught my eye. Jumping to Santa Monica, this red SL really stood out. Close by sat this very brown 560SEL with period-correct gold BBS wheels. I was surprised to see this Alfa Romeo 164 across the street from the library, but suddenly it all made senseвЂ¦ ThereвЂ™s an European garage right there, with somebody working on a Multipla of all things. The paint was good, the bumpers unbeaten, and the interior in top notch condition. This diesel W123 on Hyde Street near Russian Hill was in extremely nice shape. Still, itвЂ™s the Volvo 240s still sputtering on that I appreciate the most. Looking back on my photos, thereвЂ™s a ton of material with old Mercedes-Benzes neatly parked on Californian curbs.

The same thing, unsurprisingly, happened when I wandered around Los Angeles and San Francisco it was always the Volvos, Benzes and Alfas that I felt I had to photograph. It is weird, how my eye always picks up on the European cars in American settings, when watching practically anything State-made on TV.
